We celebrate Earth Day once a year, but did you know that tweaking your lifestyle can be beneficial for the rest of the days in the year as well? Why celebrate it just one day? Let’s make a pact to celebrate this day all through the year. These tiny changes you can make to save the earth will leave a greener planet for generations to come.
12 Tiny Changes You Can Make to Save the Earth
You don’t have to wait for any day! Here are some easy peasy ways that can help you make that change and leave a better planet for the generations to come.
No more Carbon Footprint; Go organic!
Do you choose the right products? Most products that we use today are laden with chemicals that are not good for the earth and for us! Take a stock of what you use and make that shift to use eco-friendly products. Right from your daily use to products you use to clean your home. There is a world of chemical-free products out there.
Leave the Car at Home
A carpool or walking short distances can work wonders to reduce the pollution. You save ion fuel and when you walk it’s healthy too! I know of institutions that ask the workers to ride the bicycle at least once a week to the office to reduce the pollution cars create. You can also opt for a public transport.
Go Green in your Home
No, we are not talking about switching off the power for 30 minutes today to conserve electricity. Nor are we talking about solar panels! These do help in the long run, but things like buying energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances can help to conserve energy more than you can imagine.
Turn the Faucet Off
Do you leave the water running when you brush your teeth or shave? A pro tip (a no-brainer really!) would be to close the taps while you do your daily work. You have no idea how much water you can save with this tiny act of yours. Oh yes, take shorter showers too!
Opt for paperless mails
When you choose not to opt for paper mails or bills, you are doing your bit to save the trees, I don’t even remember when was the last time I chose for a paper bill. Most of of my transactions are seamless e-mail or sms based. Which means I get a notification instead of a paper bill. Think about how much paper you can save just by getting bank statements and bills sent electronically and paid the same way.
Make your own compost
Did you know that you can make your own compost? When you set aside food waste and other organic trash and let it decompose, you are recycling the waste. You can use this compost for your plants too.Composting is a long process because this type of waste takes a long time to decompose.
Switch to E-Books
Turn the page with a single swipe. At one point of time, I had over 1000 books, picked up at various cities and places we traveled to. Yes, there is a certain delight to manually flip that page, but books also add to the clutter in your home. What I did was to invest in a beautiful Kindle. I have all my books in one place and my boys love it too! You can also opt for Audio-books. Both these options free up a lot of space in your bag.
Unplug at Night
I still struggle with this option, But one things that I really try to do is unplug from the electronics at least on the weekend. That is when I take my break too! Powering down your electronics can give them the rest too and have a longer life! Did you know that your devices are wasting energy even when they’re not turned on? Maximize the energy by unplugging them or shutting them down.
Go DIY!
If you follow my blog, you will know that I am a big fan of DIY! Right from the hand-wash to a healing balm, to loads of scrubs; I love to make my own stuff when I have the time. And when I don’t I ensure that I buy products that believe in 100% chemical-free goodness. You can view some of the products that I recommend all the time. And if you are in the mood for some DIY’s, check this treasure trove of links that have loads of recipes for DIY!
Recycle Old Electronics
Your old cell phones, power banks, irons and other electronic gadgets don’t need to gather dust lying in a drawer in your home. A lot of electronic stores offer to collect e-waste and offer to give your discounts. At least this way you know that you know that you are not contributing to the landfill.
Plants at Home. Add some Greenery.
I have plants in my balcony and I was aware that there is a collection of indoor plants that purify your home, but I never really got around finding which ones would actually work. So here are some pics of my home and a list of indoor plants that purify your home!
Switch to reusable bags
There is a reason the plastic bags are banned today! Not only do they contribute to the landfill but create havoc with the nature. No one likes to see a heap of plastic bags in the pristine beaches or sea creatures tangled in them. The bottom line is that these bags cannot be recycled. Use cloth bags instead. Cloth bags last for a longer time and can be reused.
