One thing that the COVID-19 has got with it is a lot of anxiety. At least for me. Most of us suffer do from a bad night’s sleep on many occasions of our life. The issue is you wake up feeling irritable the next day! Sleepless nights can also lead to stress related issues like anxiety or restlessness that can affect your work. So its time to get relax with some of the simple tips to get a good night sleep.
Tips to promote a good sleep
While most of us take time to unwind in different ways and our body reacts differently to stress related issues, it is important to set a routine before you sleep to relax and unwind. In these unprecedented times, I have to admit that I am stressed with the increasing number of Covid-19 cases as I try to not follow the news, but I end up doing so! Not to digress, I am sharing with you what works for me when I want to relax and unwind. Here are some tips to promote a good sleep.
Take time out to relax
A book and some relaxing brew maybe? I have always loved to switch of from my laptop around 7 pm and turn off the wi-fi if I have had a particularly exhausting day. A cup of relaxing tea from Nutty Yogi does the trick. And of course, lighting my diffuser with some refreshing scents is how I love to relax at the end of the day.
A warm bath
Nothing relaxes me more than a warm shower. A calming shower gel and I am ready to hit the bed. I do like to do this at least thrice a week or whenever I am stressed to relax myself. A scrub with some relaxing bath salts also helps to add some extra relaxation for me.
Drink warm milk
Insomnia has been a part of my life for a long time now and it was at its peak during my pregnancy. Since I could not be administered any medicines, I chose the Ayurveda method of adding a pinch of grated nutmeg to a warm glass of milk and drinking it.
Eat healthy
Avoid fatty foods and foods that are difficult to digest for dinner. Also try to eat an early dinner so that you do not feel bloated as you want to sleep. Keep at least a two hour gap between your meal and sleep. Opt for easy to digest foods like a salad or a simple meal for your dinner. Eating healthy foods to gain good health that also improves your digestion for the whole body. It’s the major requirement for your body which delivers a peaceful sleep.
Switching off gadgets
In the time when one wants to be updated because there is a fear of missing out, it really is important to switch off gadgets so that you are not exposed to the blue light. And well, the news won’t quite change, so you can read it the next day too!
Draw boundaries
This by far has been the most difficult thing for me to do considering that I work from home. There used to be a time when I would switch off and stick to my me time. But with COVID-19 and everyone working from home; I end up being online for longer than I really want! Sticking to those boundaries is very important.
Ensure a peaceful environment
Cut yourself away from the humdrum of social media and other types of media. You don’t really need to watch mud slinging news all the time! Instead opt for a peaceful environment. Dust your bed, prop up the pillows, light your favorite candle, wear a relaxing eye mask and you are done!
Focus on yourself
Even if it is for five minutes in a day, focus on yourself. Love yourself, appreciate more, express gratitude and be kind to yourself. When you choose to focus on yourself, you become the person you have always wanted to be. Make simple, yet doable changes in your life; choose happiness over anger and gratitude over resentment. I do a small exercise that makes me change my perspective. I try to make a list of all the things that make me happy and when I focus on it, I realize that I have no time for negativity.
