Did you ever realize that you could be the role model for your child’s nutrition? It’s a hectic life; I know. There are days when I have no clue when my day starts and when it ends. I am guilty of surviving on endless cups of coffee when I am drowned in my work. But when I try to do this on a regular basis, my body gives me warning signals. Constant headaches, acidity and unexplained aches become my companions. Does it ring a bell?
When I saw my son glug a glass of juice and miss his breakfast because I was doing the same, I realized that I was setting a wrong example when it came to food habits. It is a known fact that parents as nutrition role models for their kids, make a huge impact on their lifestyle. If you are a couch potato, spending weekends snacking and in front of the TV, chances are that your kids will follow suit! And well, if you are an outdoor person, you’ll realize that your children will love a walk in the park or a trek as much as you do.
Parents as nutrition role models for their kids. Why do parents need to be active?
I am not as active as I would like to be, but I know that I am getting there taking tiny steps. The first step to staying active is to eat the right food! Not just the right food, but nutritious foods. So, I am sure that you are thinking, “Why do I need to get my nutrition and health in place?” I know that I need to be active to be able to take care of myself; first and foremost. Everything else falls second in my list of priorities. My good health is primary if I am to care for everything else.

Here are some switches we made as a family to move to a healthier lifestyle. These are fairly simple and do-able. All that you need to do is bear with those whines till the routine kicks in!
- Like to snack? Replace those store bought snacks with fruits. Most fruits are fresh and are packed with oodles of nutrition that is good for your family. This makes you choose healthy food as a choice.
- Set an example. My husband is someone who needs a biscuit with a cup of tea only on the weekends. But because the biscuits were at home, the boys would binge on them to such an extent that they would skip a meal. We just stopped buying them!
- Potato chips and cheese burgers are not a healthy option. Instead a bowl of freshly tossed salad is! Encourage the, to make a salad or get involved in a meal prep. My boys and I love to watch food recipes in a loop.
What can make me feel active?
Staying active is important. It is also a choice that you must make every day. Yes you have a list of tasks to check off the to-do list but you also need to ensure you keep fatigue at bay. Did you know that just one cup of Ensure can help you when you’re tired? Watch this to know more about the role you as a parent will play in your child’s life when it comes to nutrition.
