Make Your Own Soothing Headache Relief Balm

Alright, do you remember this post I made earlier in the week? I mentioned in the post that I wanted to try out making a soothing balm for my headaches. The tigers and zandu’s were getting ineffective and I wanted to make something for myself, something that was pure and natural. I was sure that there would be a remedy that would would work.

I did a lot of searching on the internet and came across loads of recipes and stuck to this one because it seemed simple to do. I made variations to it but simply cutting down the quantity of the ingredients. I was making it for the first time and I wanted to try making lesser quantity that I could check it effectiveness.

Trust me, when you actually get down to working on the recipe, you realise how easy it was to make your own soothing headache relief balm! This balm is made of beeswax, sheanut oil, grapeseed oil and EO’s of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender. Let me just explain the use and the goodness of the EO’s here.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is known to have calming properties on the senses. Adding a few drops of lavender EO to your diffuser and letting the fragrance spread is one of the best ways to relax. When mixed with something as strong as the peppermint EO, the lavender EO calms your mind and steers your mind away from the tensions.

Eucalyptus Oil

As a child  I hated the fragrance of eucalyptus. Now I find the fragrance of eucalyptus oil very fresh absolutely invigorating and rejuvenating. It helps to ease the fatigue and relieves the tension and soreness that you may have accumulated all through the day.

Peppermint Oil

I have talked extensively about peppermint oil here. Let me be honest, peppermint is one of my very favourite essential oils. Peppermint contains an ingredient called menthol that acts as a coolant on your skin. It has a lovely fragrance and when the oil is applied topically, it relaxes the muscles and eases the tension on the applied and surrounding areas. It is also used to decongest blocked passages.

Beeswax, Sheanut oil, Grapeseed oil

These are the base for the balm. I could not find sheanut oil so I substituted it with pure shea butter. The Beeswax and Shea Butter were bought from Ebay by a listed seller. The grapeseed oil is available on Flipkart.

It took me about 10 days to get the entire lot of  ingredients because I could not find a seller in the city I stay for the base I needed for the balm. With all the ingredients delivered, there was just one thing left to do – make the balm!

How to Make Your Own Soothing Headache Relief Balm

What you need
  • Pure Shea butter – a little more than 1 tbsp
  • Pure Beeswax – one tsp
  • Grapeseed Oil – half a tsp
  • Eucalyptus EO – 5 drops
  • Peppermint EO – 10 drops
  • Lavender EO  – 10 drops
How to make it

Melt the base of the balm ( beeswax, grapeseed oil and shea butter) on a double boiler at the lowest heat. The beeswax takes the longest to melt. Keep on stirring constantly so that the oils blend together. When these have melted and blendedwell remove from the boiler and add the oils quickly while stirring constantly. Pour it in the jars you want to store it in and ensure that the have air tight lids. Keep it aside overnight to set well. The start to finish was about 10 minutes. And that is how the balm looks like. I am super thrilled with the efforts and I am yet to know the results! Ah! I will have to wait for a headache to check the effectiveness of the balm.

This sounds good – the other balms tend to be too intense for me!! You should start selling these balms in pretty lavender and mint colored pots – they’d be quite a hit!

I am bad at business 😛 I’ll gladly make it for people who want it rather than sell it. 🙁

I love the ingredients and your process to make the balm was straightforward and looks easy enough. The only thing left our was how to use the balm when I feel the migraine coming on. My migraines last 3 days and I have to be at work no matter what so I need something I can use at work. Thanks!
