Five years ago, when I was in one of those cleaning modes, I came across a stack of old greeting cards, hand-written letters and other memorable items weighing a little over two kilos! The cleaning got delayed by two days because most of the time was spent to re-read those cards and hand-written letters that got back some memories long forgotten. Once that was done, I was filled with the mammoth task of destroying those memories. Let me tell you shredding two and a half kilos of paper, especially cards is not an easy task. Apart from aching fingers and wrists, I was left with the huge pile of paper that had to be thrown away. I remember two thoughts that crossed my mind that day ; “what a waste of paper” and “I wish I could save these memories.”
Two years ago I came across this beautiful concept that lets you grow your memories. Literally. Omved has a huge collection of “Plant-A-Wish” cards that is the perfect card you would want to send across to friends and family for any occasion. The card was conceptualised keeping one thought in mind, ” People should grow and not throw.”
How do these work?
Each of these cards comes with an instruction how to use them. What you need is plant pot with fertilized soil. Currently all the cards have only wild grass seeds in them. I wish that they had actual flower seeds and it would have been wonderful to see what flowers would bloom when they were planted. Unfortunately, the weather does not allow plants seeds to be a part of these cards that are made with recycled paper. So what you have are wild grass seeds that grow into tufts of grass when planted.
How to grow: Place the card in a pot of soil and cover with a light layer of soil. You can also shred the cards and spread it on the soil and then cover it with a layer of soil. Ensure that you firm down the soil after you have placed the card. The seed paper should be more than 1/8” deep in the pot of soil. Water the pot regularly to keep it moist and give plenty of sunshine so that the seeds can germinate. The seed usually take 4-6 weeks to bloom.
Priced at INR 100, you can buy a variety of these cards online and if you stay in Mumbai, head over to the Omved stores at a location closest to you and pick one or more. You will always find one for every occasion. Make a wish that will last forever and the next time, you want to send a card, gift one of these that will grow and spread the green living.
Stay Green. Be Happy!
