Of late, I have been have been inundated with articles that talk about common skin care mistakes that are damaging your face. Did you ever notice that there are a few hundreds of variations of posts with a similar title? And I am just adding to it!
Have you ever thought why these articles are written? The answer is simple! Most people do not follow a simple skin care advice that is given.
7 Common Skin Care Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Face
[click_to_tweet tweet=”Perhaps, it’s time to stop wasting money on expensive cosmetics that promise miracles and just start from the basics? Maybe re-look at the common skin care mistakes you must be making? #myepicawrites #MyFriendAlexa” quote=”Perhaps, it’s time to stop wasting money on expensive cosmetics that promise miracles and just start from the basics? Maybe re-look at the common skin care mistakes you must be making? “]
We collated a list of the most common skin care mistakes that people do. (I’ve been there and done that too!). In this post, we’ll try our best to protect you from 10 of the most widespread mistakes when it comes to taking care of the face.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 1 – You change your cosmetics too often
It gets a tad difficult to choose from an array of face oils and serums that these beauty magazines keep showing us. With so many choices, it is normal to get confused. The first step to combat this issue is to know your skin type and stick to a skin care regime. I know its a tad difficult to stop buying that another face cream or serum! What I did was to stick to a skin care regime that has worked wonders on my skin. The truth is that for results to show, you need to set a right skin regime and follow it for at least 6 months for the results to show.

Common Skin Care Mistakes # 2 – Are you exfoliating daily?
I have said this earlier too. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells. Our skin has its own process for doing this, but exfoliators help to hasten up the process. The result is glowing skin that looks visibly younger. Exfoliators can be chemical, which chemically disintegrate the dead skin cells, or physical, which scrub to loosen the bonds between the skin cells. You can use scrub even for your body. Look up this post that lists the best natural scrubs in India.
But the truth is that it is not safe to use a scrub on a daily basis no matter how gentle it is. When you use it on a daily basis, you risk depriving your skin of its protective layer.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 3 – Are you wiping off that make-up completely?
After a long tiring day, do you just used your trusted facial cleanser to wipe off not just the dirt and grime, but also the make up traces? If you are doing this, you leave cosmetic particles on your face and that can lead to the clogging of the pores, acne, and an increase in the oil content of the skin. Opt for chemical free toner that doubles up as a cleanser to clean your skin thoroughly. Even though I am not a make-up person, but the day I do apply even a hint of lipstick I use pure coconut oil from Omved to wipe it clean. You can also check this brilliant toner that doubles up as a make-up remover from Juicy Chemistry.
Other popular products in the market are micellar water, cleansing oil, or a cleansing balm. Honestly, I have used none of them and I cannot vouch for the same.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 4 – You don’t use a toner
Toners help to restore the pH balance of the skin and prepares it for further procedures. Spritz a bit of a toner before you dab your favourite moisturiser and you have some good skin care! Some toners that I have used and recommend are Vetiver Skin Mist from Kamaakshi Botanicals and the Pure Rose Water from Daughter Earth. Toners can tackle various skin problems, although the main intention is to balance the skin’s pH level. Some toners can tackle signs of ageing or redness. Toners can also make the skin more receptive for the products applied after it.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 5 – Do you wash your face before a shower?
There is never a right time to wash your face. Depending on your skin type, you may want to wash your skin more than once. But if you are stepping into a shower, it is recommended that you wash your face after the shower. Why is this a common skin care mistake? If you are using hair products in the shower ( I am talking about the chemical-laden ones!) they will often contain parabens and silicones that are not good for your skin. To combat this issue, opt for a gentle chemical free cleanser that will wipe off all traces of chemicals.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 6 – You don’t apply a night care cream
If you are someone who applies make-up the entire day, chances are that you will want to keep your skin clean. On the contrary, your skin needs as much nourishment at night too. Try Omved’s Gotu Kola Cream. Instensely hydrating, it provides that added boost of nourishment to your skin as you sleep. You wake to skin that is soft and supple.
Common Skin Care Mistakes # 7 – You use a sunscreen only when its sunny!
A sunscreen is an important part of your skin care regime. You don’t apply a sunscreen on a bright sunny day! In fact experts suggest that using a sunscreen daily irrespective of the climate conditions helps to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays.
Harmful ultraviolet radiation is always there. And this is precisely you should be using a sunscreen all year round. You can try this Ultra Light Sunscreen from Mamaearth that is specifically suited for Indian skin.
Which of these common skin care mistakes that you make? Do you think this post has inspired you in a tiny way to change your skin care habits? Please tell us about it in the comments!

Agreed all your points. Toner is one of the main ingredients one must use. It heals skin problems too well, also very light.
Exactly we must use sunscreen even when we are indoors and re-apply every 3 hours?

You can make a quick scrub at home home. Powder some oats, a dash of cinnampn powder, fine brown sugar, honey and some aloe gel or rose water or milk. Your scrub is ready 🙂

My skin was prone to acne and rashes. After I started exfoliating it came back to normal. Then I realized a few things need to be taken care and few things need to be used less often. I have also started using less chemical on the face. This is really a great list.

Useful post about skin care mistakes, It’s best to learn from other’s mistakes than to feel the urge to commit one by oneself & then think of learning. I think we’ve all made some of these mistakes to some degree or another.
