Celebrating Earth Hour {Green Living}

March 25, 2014 By: Pratibha18 Comments

Celebrating Earth Hour

I have talked about my journey in green living and how I am managing to get there. I believe that it is the first step that is the most difficult to take. Once the step is taken, the rest of the journey is a smooth one, filled with learnings and awareness.

Green living is all about leading a conscious life that makes you more aware of your lifestyle.

Earth Hour is an initiative that was started by WWF in 2007 in Sydney that focused on a hour of lights-off. 7 years later, it has grown and more than 10,000 cities and towns worldwide participate in the movement world wide, whose main theme continues to be a one-hour no power movement. While you can think of celebrating Earth Hour to make it a success, there are also a few things that you can follow to ensure you are doing your bit to make the earth a better place to stay. And the best part, you don’t need the Earth Hour, you can do it everyday!

Celebrating Earth Hour – 8 ways to make saving power a success

1. Turn off your lights

This is what Earth Hour is all about. Turn off the lights and save power for one hour. Do not limit yourself to just switching off the lights, go a step further and unplug all the electronic devices too ensuring energy conservation. Your laptop, television, AC are sine of the devices that you can unplug.

2. Turn off the telly

Try spending time together as a family. When was the last time you all went out for a walk or just sat down having a hearty conversation? Re-discover the art of communication as you start spending time with your family.

3. Use the right products

I have mentioned this earlier also. Switch to using LED lights as they are a better option and they help you save on electricity. Ecotokri has a range of LED and CFL bulbs that you can choose from.  CFL bulbs not only use about one-fifth of the energy that is required and it lasts longer.

4. Switch off the lights

My boys are actually flitting from one room to another. And you know what that means? The lights, fans and the AC’s are perpetually on. While it is a task at times, but it helps! Switch off the lights that are not in use.

5. Make people aware

If you live in a a society, it would be a nice thing to make your neighbours and other people in the society aware of the Earth Hour. You may not have many people agreeing to the concept, but even if a few people could follow, it would make a difference. Make it an initiative if you can.

6. Eat a cold meal

Did you know that when you heat food, you release more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Once a week indulge in cold meals. How about eating a raw veggie or a fruit salad for dinner? One cold meal a week with your family can greatly reduce the amount of a carbon footprint that you can leave on the planet. And the fruits and veggies are also good for your health!

7. Create an energy conservation schedule

It does not have to be something fancy and elaborate. Your energy conservation schedule needs a few doable tips that are easy to follow.  Going wi-fi free for a day, spending time outdoors with the family can contribute in a big way to conserve the energy and the good part is that you can end up spending more time with the family.

8. Plant a tree or a plant

This is one of the most easiest things that one can do. Plant a tree or a plant in your home that will do wonders for your environment. When you plant a tree, not only does it provide a habitat for the birds and animals, but it also helps to replace the carbon dioxide from the air with oxygen.

When is the Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is celebrated on the last Saturday of March every year. [pullquote] Mark the date. This year we celebrate Earth Hour on 29 March 2014. Do your bit and save power.[/pullquote]         These are some easy ways of celebrating Earth Hour and ensuring that you are reducing the carbon footprint and making the earth a better place to stay. What are your mantras?

Very useful and practical tips, Pratibha! And so simple to instruct kids. Adults, not so much 😉

Very timely reminders…I must admit I do most of them. But for some reason, I kill every plant I plant! I am terrible with them! 🙂

Psst … I kill some of them too! No matter how hard I try, I can never grow basil and aloe! I was jumping with joy recently when the capsicums began to show and now they have withered 🙁

I think the earth hour, though symbolic, is a good way to start thinking (and acting) on conservation of energy/power. With more and more gadgets becoming our family members (!), we should take conservation of electricity very seriously.

Great tips, Pratibha. Just switched on the lights here!!
Today, I came across, a video which says that celebrating Earth Hour will do little to help the planet, in fact it gives people the wrong impression about how to address climate issues. It states that global warming is a real problem, but Earth Hour is not the answer. Taken to its logical conclusion, if switching the lights off for one hour is a good idea, why not for all the other 8,759 hours of the year?
As you rightly mentioned, doing our bit everyday is the key to make our Earth a better place, indeed!

For me it has always been these small steps that matter. In the long run it is something really massive that we will be contributing to.

I have a successful mint plant and curry leaves that just refuse to grow – so I’d say I’m 50-50 with respect to gardening! Great tips, and I think it’s really important to train our kids to follow them as well.
